Crowns and Caps

Although our teeth are incredibly strong and meant to take the great forces that biting and chewing place on them every day, sometimes teeth chip or break. This can happen because of an accident, disease that causes tooth weakness, or other reasons. When this occurs, our experienced dentists at Advanced Dental Care can place a dental crown on your tooth to strengthen it and restore its appearance.

Simply put, crowns and caps are fitted coverings for broken or weakened teeth. They can be made of metal, porcelain fused to metal, or ceramic material. Contrary to popular belief, there is no difference between crowns and caps, though some people call the metal coverings “crowns” and the tooth-colored coverings “caps.”

Our Crowning Process

At Advanced Dental Care, we crown and cap teeth for a variety of reasons, and the process is typically straightforward, though the overall procedure will depend on your particular circumstance. During a visit to have your tooth crowned, we will give you a special anesthetic to ensure you don’t feel pain before filing your affected tooth and measuring it for a custom fitting. We’ll then affix a temporary crown on your tooth for you to wear while your permanent crown is custom-made. On your return visit, we’ll attach the new crown and ensure it fits properly. You shouldn’t have any pain after we install the permanent crown. However, if you have not had a root canal, your newly-crowned tooth may be slightly sensitive to cold. Our crowns can last many years, depending on the material used, the location of the crown, and any bite issues you might have.

Our Patients Say…

Fillings in a few of my front teeth (were) discolored. I finally made the decision to pursue advanced dental work when my front tooth chipped. The consultation visit gave me all the information I needed to make the decision to move forward with having the six front teeth replaced with crowns…. The care and attention to detail (taken) in preparing the final crowns are apparent by the appearance of the final product – the crowns are amazing and they’ve given me my smile back.

Thanks again for the professional care and attention you and your staff showed me during my visits.
